Beyond a specific interval threshold, tighter spacing does not add revenue. It adds time to every round on the course that day. Golfers who wait five or six hours to play 18 holes do not come back. They post reviews. They tell their foursome to book somewhere else. The incremental green fee from those extra groups does not offset the attrition from frustrated repeat players.

Most operators are making tee sheet decisions without knowing the math that governs how intervals translate into round times. That math exists. It has existed for decades. It comes from academic research, and it is specific enough to be applied directly to how you set your tee sheet.

What the Research Says About Tee Intervals and Round Time

Dr. Lucius Riccio at Columbia University spent years studying pace of play on golf courses. His research produced a formula that quantifies the relationship between tee interval spacing and round time. The core insight is this: round time is not just determined by how fast golfers play. It is a function of the interval between groups.

That last number is not a typo. A 7-minute interval produces rounds over seven hours long under this model.

The critical thing to understand is that this curve is not linear. The penalty for tightening intervals is small at the looser end and becomes severe at the tighter end. Moving from 14 to 12 minutes adds about 9 minutes to a round. Moving from 10 to 8 minutes adds 75 minutes. That disproportionate acceleration is the part most operators have never seen quantified.

Why Squeezing Intervals Hurts Revenue

Work through the operator's logic. A course moving from 10-minute to 8-minute intervals fits two additional groups into the same window. Two more groups at whatever your green fee rate is. On paper, that looks like a solid revenue gain.

Here is what the math says is also happening. Average round time just increased by 75 minutes. Every golfer on the course that day is now playing a round that is an hour and fifteen minutes longer than it was at 10-minute intervals. Some of them planned to be done by a certain time. They are not done by that time. Their carts are impounded mentally before they finish 18.

Variability is the primary driver of this effect. One slow group, one group that takes extra time on a par 3, one group that cannot clear a green fast enough, creates a cascade that reaches every group behind it. At tight intervals, there is no buffer. The cascade propagates through the entire field. At wider intervals, faster groups absorb it and it dissipates.

The incremental green fee from two additional groups does not offset the attrition from the golfers who experience a five or six hour round and decide not to return. Repeat play is where course revenue actually lives. A single frustrated foursome that stops booking represents far more lost revenue than two additional groups gained on one day.

What the Optimal Tee Interval Actually Looks Like

Dr. Riccio's conclusion is worth knowing precisely. The optimal tee interval is the shortest interval that does not substantially increase round time.

That is the target. Not the longest interval you can justify. Not an industry benchmark. The shortest interval that keeps round time from climbing.

That number is not universal. It depends on course layout, hole difficulty distribution, golfer demographic, cart versus walking ratio, and weather patterns. A 14-minute interval at a fast municipal course may be conservative. A 10-minute interval at a slower resort layout may already be past the inflection point for that specific course.

The formula gives you a model. Your course gives you the actual data. Those two things together let you find your number.

Industry benchmarks are not your course. Published research gives you the model. To apply it, you need data from your own layout, your own golfer mix, your own conditions.

Are you at 10 minutes and already seeing 4-hour-35-minute rounds? Moving to 9 minutes will cost you 25 more minutes per round. The formula says so. Your data will confirm it or tell you your course behaves differently.

The point is to make this decision with numbers, not instinct.
